OBS Nammu - Ocean Bottom Seismometer

Nammu - The next development of Lobster

10 years after the development of LOBSTER we have the pleasure to introduce the spectacular next generation: NAMMU.

The power consumption was reduced by more than the half – simoultaneously the signal-noise ratio was increased to 142 dB

NAMMU is equipped with the broadband seismometer „trillium compact“ from Nanometrics, data are recorded with 32 bit from the datalogger „6D6“. Up to 8 instuments can be stacked on one pallet, up to 40 instruments find place in one standard 20“ container. As an alternative NAMMU can be equipped with 4.5 Hz geophones – power consumption decreases to 40% in case!

Technical data and functions Nammu

NAMMU, The Next Generation LOBSTER, is a Broadband OBS-System in a brand new design with many unique features:

In the robust and shock resistant syntactic foam shell are integrated a titanium pressure tube of 210mm diameter with broadband seismometer “Trillium Compact 120 sec”, data logger “6D6” and battery pack (see picture right), as well as titanium releaser KUMQuat, hydrophone and head buoy. Flasher, radio beacon and flag for localization are mounted outside.

This configuration allows recording of one year. For 3-year recording additional batteries are added with a power-backpack for the OBS. Hence the OBS can also be deployed in extremely remote areas with access every couple of years only.

The utmost small size of half of a pallet simplifies the handling and enables to stack three of them in two rows on one pallet.

Anchor and float are asymmetrically designed: NAMMU descends to the seafloor and stays there for data recording in horizontal position but ascends to the water surface in vertical position.

Thanks to the new Data Logger “6D6 a couple of unique features are possible – in short:

  • modular system with multiple channels: starting
  • with 4 seismic channels, one can freely add
  • additional channels for different purposes
  • a GPS-unit and also AIS can be incorporated
  • a CSAC (Chip Scale Atomic Clock) is available
  • it is possible to swap the storage device from
  • outside the housing while recording

R&D project "OOKULO"

With the new measurement system we will, as the esparanto name for "eye" suggests, cast another eye on high-precision measurements in the deep sea. The double "O" in the name symbolizes a pair of eyes and make clear that we want to image three-dimensional resolution...

Exhibition moved

Exhibitions mark important dates in the year, which are already booked in the previous year's planning.

This year everything is different. Both the EAGE and the oi have been moved to December and we will try - if the corona situation allows - to participate in both exhibitions....
